Beth Macy: Meet the Author of DOPESICKMonday, September 24, 2018 at 7:00 PMIn the Thomas P. DeanRacey and Dean Inc., Underground Lounge and CafeSponsored by: Clifton Forge Public LibraryFREE We are delighted to welcome back the warm, generous, funny and remarkably talented author, Beth Macy, to discuss her latest (and by her own description, hardest) book, Dopesick. Beth will discuss the book and the efforts she undertook to 'get the story'. Books will be available for purchase and signature by the author. In this masterful work, Beth Macy, Author takes us into the epicenter of America's twenty-plus year struggle with opioid addiction. From distressed small communities in Central Appalachia to wealthy suburbs; from disparate cities to once-idyllic farm towns; it's a heartbreaking trajectory that illustrates how this national crisis has persisted for so long and become so firmly entrenched. The only book to fully chart the devastating opioid crisis in America: An unforgettable portrait of the families and first responders on the front lines, from a New York Times bestselling author and journalist who has lived through it.

We are excited to invite you for a FREE Community Yoga event to coincide with the Harvest Moon and to take place on the ground of the Masonic Amphitheatre in downtown Clifton Forge, led by Greg Burns. Yoga has become a word that most are very familiar with in our culture, yet still many folks have little knowledge about or experience in actually trying yoga. Local yogi's Joan Vannordsall, Pam Marshall, and Greg Burns are excited to offer the chance to come see, hear and experience what this yoga thing is all about and why so many people are finding wellness through their practice of doing yoga. Done properly yoga is so much more than just stretching the body. This event will offer the opportunity to experience Hatha Yoga (body postures & breath), Chair Yoga (yoga w/ accommodations) and Nada Yoga (yoga of sound). Class to be held outside on the grounds of the Masonic Amphitheatre from 5-6pm. We will talk briefly about yoga but mostly this event is to offer a direct experience of Yoga. There will be opportunity to ask questions after the event. No prior experience is necessary and the event is open to all. Yoga mats and blankets will be provided, so nothing is needed to attend although participants are encouraged to wear loose, comfortable clothing.

Jeff Dayton's 15 years as bandleader and guitarist with Glen Campbell were filled with shows, adventures and stories as they traveled and recorded together. Glen remains one of America’s best-loved and most-respected country/pop artists of all time, and it’s only natural that since his Alzheimer’s diagnosis and his recent passing, there would be a renewed demand for his music to be heard. Jeff has been answering that call with Salute to Glen Campbell, on tour now. The show is filled with Glen’s hits, led by his former right-hand man. Dayton occasionally calls on fellow alumni from the tours and together they share the joys and fun, the stories behind the songs and an intimate reflection on the pain of losing an artist who was a great friend to us all. The show has been playing to sellout crowds in New Mexico, Colorado, Arizona, Minneapolis and San Diego, and this year is adding Oklahoma, South Dakota, Iowa, Indiana, Wisconsin, Philadelphia and more.

    Show details

    Locality:

    513 Church Street
    Clifton Forge, VA 24422

Greg Burns will host the gathering and will bring a number of drums and rhythm instruments with him that can be used (gently please). He strongly encourages you to bring a drum, or bring a friend, or bring both a drum and a friend and come join the fun! Greg is a local Sound Practitioner who has regularly hosted drum circles in the Staunton area. This will be his first time hosting one in Clifton Forge! After beginning with a brief moment of silence to bring us all together, the drum circle will unfold in a mostly organic fashion. The rhythms we play will be determined by the group that is present and sounds that want to come through us. We will drum and share for about an hour and give another moment of silent thanks before concluding. We will gather in the outdoor grounds area of the Historic Masonic Theatre and Amphitheatre with the circle to begin at 3pm. The Amphitheater is located at 513 Church Street in downtown Clifton Forge, VA. There is street parking available all through this area. The grounds provide ample space to bring a chair or throw down a blanket and bring the whole family.
